Animal Planet

Wow. What a pleasant day at the Park. The fog was thick and heavy that early morning, but the sun eventually melted it all away and left us with a gorgeous day to enjoy God’s amazing creativity.

The Ridley Tour continued to delight the crowd at Parksville. Between Derek feeding BassBurgers to the buzzards down by the dam, lil’ Hunter catching a baby turtle and lizards along the "rocks" by the boat ramp and Curtis catching Big Fish (for the second time in a row at Parksville) it was practically a Ridley Circus entertaining the wildlife at the Park’.

And for all you anglers who Goose Egged at the Park, lil’ Hunter put one in the boat, guys! And thanks for those two lizards, Hunter. My little boy and girl appropriately named one Rip and the other one Rap.

Speaking of God’s creativity: Just after the fog lifted, I was left stunned at what appeared to be a duck doing 100-meter sprints across the top of the water…TWICE. I mean that duck was sprinting like a bullet! I then thought to myself, "Self…perhaps the Animal Kingdom has some sort of Spring Track & Field meet and this athletic duck, which I named Bill, was ramping up to take home the Gold this year at the Park."

But shortly later on as I watched a Chipmunk scoot along the bank and listened to the Doves cooing, Nature revealed to me the Ugly truth about Mr. duck-Bill. Scott McClanahan, early that morning in the blinding fog, heard Mr. Bill warming up in the distance…stretching his wings & legs...basically minding his own business. When in a frantic, Scott slung his rattle-trap out into the mist and lipped Mr. Bill. Scott then set the hook, jacking Mr. Bill’s lower jaw out of socket ultimately causing too much drag for lift-off. Sickening.

Didn’t I mention in the last newsletter to watch out for Jerry Goodner. Well, Jerry came to the Park loaded for Bear and blasted an impressive 7.95 pound o’ fish for 1st Place individual honors. This incredible showing catapulted Jerry to 2nd overall in the Angler of the Year points chase.

John Talton…he’s just an Animal!…posted another strong showing with 3rd place individual honors. Big John continues to stand atop the mountain peak in the overall title chase.

That’s all folks. See ya’ at JR’s!

Ridley’sBelieve it or not!

Holy smoke & mirrors! Little did I imagine with all the "Ridley Roof" hoopla going on that the newcomer Ridley (Derek) and Angler of the Year Ridley (Curtis) would pair up. So what happened? Derek managed just 1 fish, but hung on to his 2nd place position in overall points. And Curtis…with a strong 3rd place finish…swiftly moved back up to 5th place position in overall points after dropping back with his Guntersville collapse…Goose Egged.

That’s two Ridley’s running in the top five nowBelieve it or not!

Elsewhere in the top five? Guess who stands on Top of the Standings now? We’ll, let’s start it out with a little song I wrote. Want to hear it? Hear it goes:

(Big John, Big John)

Ev'ry mornin' at the lake you could see him arrive

He stood six foot six and weighed two forty five

Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip

And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big John.

(Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)

Nobody seemed to know where John called home

He just drifted into town and stayed all alone

He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy

And if you spoke at all, you just said "Hi" to Big John.

In case you somehow couldn’t figure out who this song is referring to…that be John Talton, folks!!

And Jerry Goodner has quietly snuck into 3rd place. Better watch out for Jerry guys. He definitely has the potential to take it all this year. Ridley’s or no Ridley’s.

And look at Mark Smith. Consistent finishes has this angler quietly sitting in 4th place overall and is not too far out of the hunt. But, he may need to load up a double-barrel if he plans to go head to head with Big John.

McClanahan News Update: Another weak finish. I think he may have finally put a fish in the boat at the ‘jack. No Glory though. And I have not heard any "predictions" for Parksville this time around. I wouldn’t be calling me at this point either…given his absolutely disastrous results so far.

That’s all folks! See ya at the Park’.

OUT OF THE BLUE

Wow…what a colorful change compared to the first tournament of the year. Definitely a stark contrast compared to the first tournament…for the most part.

Let’s start with the weather. Cloudy, a bit of precipitation and frigid at Parksville. Then windy, cold and blue bird skies at Guntersville.

What about Nathan Sneed and Andrew Hicks? Just out of the blue, these guys are putting it to us so far this year. If you remember Nathan and Andrew took runner-up boat weight $$$ at Parksville…and then backed that up with 1st place overall boat weight honors & Nathan taking 1st place individual honors at Guntersville. Impressive. I believe Nathan may work at Duracell and Andrew may be employed by Cleveland Utilities…and it looks as though this strategic pair charged themselves up over the winter. What do you think?

And what about the Ridley’s? (there are 4 of these in our club you know) Curtis, last year’s Angler of the Year and winner of the Parksville tournament, blanked at Guntersville. But then…out of the blue comes other brother Derek. Derek had an impressive catch which landed him with 3rd place individual honors and he is sitting 2nd in overall points!!! Man, I bet there is some smack talk going on under the Ridley roof…with lil’ Hunter right in there with them.

Oh, but then my favorite. Daniel "Undertow" Swafford finally climbs out from underneath a rock and guess what? You guessed it. Out of the blue, Undertow decides to take a stab at fishing with the Club again. The result? The sucker lands Big Fish $$$ and 2nd place individual honors at Guntersville. Incredible. And if anyone wants to know how Daniel’s nickname came about…feel free to ask me about an interesting story. I am sure Daniel would love for you to hear it.

And then there is Scott McClanahan? Can you believe he called me back up after his Parksville fiasco to lay another claim for Guntersville? His exact words were, "I am coming to win at Guntersville and I am bringing H E double L with me!" H E double L being Greg Davenport and the reunion of the Xtreme Team. I have to admit…these two are a potent pair.

The Ugly result. The Xtreme Team left Goose Pond with a Goose Egg & singing the blues.

That’s all folks! See ya at the ‘jack.

  • 1st Place Boat Weight: Nathan Sneed, Andrew Hicks

  • 2nd Place Boat Weight: John Talton, Jerry Shields

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Well, the kickoff tournament of the year is always Good and Parksville Lake was definitely Good to the club anglers last year. Wow…looking back again…there were a lot of fish caught at Parksville last year!!

But, the weather conditions were Bad and most definitely kept some of the "regulars" on the couch. Curtis Ridley, last years Angler of the Year, picked up where he left off by capturing 1st place individual honors with a limit of 3 fish and 10.15 pounds. Curtis also pocketed the Big Fish $$$ with his 4.75 pounder. Curtis went home loaded as he also won the case of Shell Nautilus 2-Cycle Oil.

The always strong and consistent John Talton picked up 2nd place with his limit of 3 fish and 8.67 pounds. And rounding out the podium was another strong finish for Dewayne Nanny with his 3 fish and 6.15 pounds.

And the Ugly? How about Xtremist Scott McClanahan!! Scott, a usual money taker at Parksville, vowed (with authority) to take it all this go-round at Parksville.

The Ugly result: Scott failed to put a stinkin’ fish in the boat!!

That’s all folks…see ya’ at Guntersville!  And ya’ll "fair-weather" fishermen as well.
